Place the flat side of the jack under the car. Where you place the jack is very important. You want to place it between the two tires, not on the outside, this gives the car more stability as the center of gravity is further in. Place the jack near the flat tire side as well. Very important! Place the jack under the metal frame of the car, NOT the plastic or fiberglass body on the outside. If you raise the jack on the body, it will crack the plastic and it could also collapse. Often car will have a notch on the metal bar under the car to fit a jack into. Once your jack is in position, you can begin pumping the jack. As it goes up, it will lift the car up in the air. Pump until the tire is a few inches off the ground.

Remember when you jack the car up to leave room to fit the new tire in. Now you are ready for what is usually the hardest part: Taking of the lug nuts. Grab your tire iron, there are a couple of different types.  One has one socket, another one has four. The four way wrench is the best, because you may not know what sized socket you need plus the 4 way provides great leverage when taking of the nuts.

You usually have five lug nuts.  Place the socket onto a lug nut and turn it counter clock wise. This is by far the most difficult part. The nuts can be on really tight and it can take a good bit of strength to loosen them. If they were put on by an electric wrench they can be very difficult to turn. Other factors, such as cold weather, can make them tighter as well.

Loosen one nut but do not unscrew it all the way. You don’t want to put too much pressure on the other nuts. Loosen it just enough to release some pressure so that it turns easily. Now move to the opposite screw across from the one you just did. Loosen it like the other.  Then move across to another one and loosen it. Keep going back and forth loosening them all until they are all done. Now you can finish unscrewing them all the way.

Take all the nuts off. It is VERY important to keep track of where all the nuts are. They can be easy to lose and you need them all for the spare. Pull the flat tire off and set it somewhere to the side for now.  Take the spare tire and line it up with the screws. The holes should be facing inwards, not outwards. Slide the spare onto the screws.

Now you will put the nuts on in the same way you took them off. Screw one on till there is a slight bit of pressure on the tire. Then place the nut across from it on and turn until there is pressure as well, then the next across from it. Keep going until all the nuts are on but not tight. Now you can tighten them.

Use the wrench to tighten the nuts as much as possible. Go back over them again to make sure they are on good. You definitely don’t want them coming loose while driving. Once you are sure they are tight enough. Make sure nothing is under the car and release the handle on the jack or crank it in the opposite direction to lower it.

Place all the equipment and the spare tire back in the trunk and close it. Get in the car. Don’t forget to turn off your hazards and remember to RELEASE the emergency break as well.  Once you start the car you will probably want to drive to some place you can wash your hands. Otherwise, you are good to go.

One company which has added hatchbacks to their inventory includes Hyundai which added a version to their popular Accent.  Hyundai expects almost half of it sales to be hatchbacks. Kia introduced the Forte hatchback and the company said that sales have already exceeded expectations. Even Mazda has one called the Mazda3 and it’s actually pricier then it’s regular car.

Even upscale luxury auto makers are taking advantage of this trend. Audi has its A3 five-door and the A7 is coming. Porsche, Mercedes Benz and Aston martin all have hatchback models.  Cerritos Toyota sells hatchbacks in Orange County, Cerritos and Long Beach.

Volkswagen Jetta

This compact individual car is ideal for the independent woman. It is roomy enough for a growing family and has the engine capacity of a VW GTI. There is also a diesel Jetta which has great fuel economy. It is also clean and also very quiet. It easily accommodates two adults and three children.

Mercedes Benz E class

This is a prestigous car. It is large enough to accommodate the whole family and also compact enough to for easy parking. It has that touch of luxury. The inside has a plush dashboard and steering wheel which features soft touch buttons. It has a fantastic engine which runs smoothly and is very powerful. Altogether well worth the price.

Mazda MX 5 Miata

This would be a great car for a woman with no family or an excellent second car. It is really a fun car and very economical too. The room in the boot is limited but enough for just one woman. The integrated roll bars which are behind each seat add practical safety benefits. The only downside with this car is don’t even consider it if you are over 6ft which I suppose is another reason its more of a ladies car.

Another Mazda but this time a four or five door version. The five door is recommended for its practicality and there is more space for a growing family. The body shell is rigid and the suspension has been made for improved steering and sharper handling. One important difference is the addition of electronic stability control which can help the driver from control or over aggressive driving. This little car is a reliable all rounder.

Subaru Forester

This is a real family car. For the woman that likes the outdoors and needs that extra bit of space.
Once again safety features are a strong area with antilock brakes and front seat mounted airbags come as standard. One other feature is the all wheel drive system which gives great handling conditions in all the weather conditions.

1. Ignition/Push Start Buttons – The first car to my knowledge to come standard with this feature was the Honda S2000. Although you still need to put a key into the ignition, the push button start was a great idea that caught on with manufacturers everywhere. BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus wasted no time in adding this to their line-up. But now this feature is even better; you don’t even need to put the key into any ignition, just have the key in your pocket and the car will start right up with the push of a button!
2. Navigation Systems – With the popularity of Magellan, Tom Tom, and other road map systems, it was only a matter of time before the in-dash navigation system would make its way onto current cars. I look forward to the day when I can afford a new car with the in-dash nav/DVD system.
3. Gas/Electric Hybrids – This has been the future of automobiles for years. Toyota and Honda know this, but it was just this year that U.S. automakers got their act together and started producing hybrid vehicles. Soon all cars will be hybrids, then electric, then gas will be dead forever!
4. Cylinder Cut-Off systems – This is by far my favorite new wave in the car industry. Cylinder Deactivation essentially turns a V-8 engine into a 4-cylinder by cutting fuel to half of the cylinder banks. This is a great way for big V-8 trucks and SUV’s to get reasonable gas mileage.
5. Paddle Shifters – We go from my favorite invention to my least favorite. In fact I hate the idea of paddle shifters on everyday cars. I feel they should be reserved for million dollar Ferrari’s that need millisecond shifts. Now cars as lowly as the Mitsubishi Lancer will get high tech paddle shifters. This marks the beginning of the end for clutch operated, hand shifted cars. I shed a tear.
6. Rear view Cameras – This option grew out of necessity. Supercars like the McLaren F1 which has the tiniest of rear windows relied on a camera to see what’s behind. Then big trucks and SUV’s like the Infiniti FX have caught onto the trend. Now many luxury cars offer this system. It makes reversing much safer and will definitely help in the area of parking.
7. Turbochargers and Smaller Engines – Again auto manufacturers like Volkswagen have used turbocharged 4-cylinder engines to produce as much horsepower as a V-8 while getting incredible gas mileage. I have always been a big fan of turbos’, which used the wasted exhaust gasses to power up.
8. Small Cars/Spacious Interiors – Again it is the Japanese sub-compact industry that sparked the rise of these cars in America. Hatchbacks have been around for years, and the folding rear seats allow for a ton of cubic space in a hatchback style car.
9. Capless Fuel Systems – Gas can evaporate! Yup this is news to me but very true. Ford is on the leading edge with their GT Supercar which features a capless fuel system. This internal sealing feature will be a trend we see on new cars in the future.
10. Information Systems – The Ford Sync provides real time traffic reports, an On-Star like feature that alerts authorities in the event of an accident, and a vehicle diagnostic system.

With these new features appearing on more new cars, the race is on for car manufacturers to provide the consumers with the newest technology.
