Many car companies aren’t just producing more efficient cars. They are also using renewable energy, solar energy and using recycled materials in their cars.

Using solar energy doesn’t only cut electricity costs but it’s also much more environmentally friendly. Ford Motor has massive solar panels installed at its plant in Michigan which is used to power some of its operations. More than 2 million watt hours of energy can be stored on these huge panels. GM also has solar panels at its factory in Spain.Volkswagen is using hydro-electric power for around ten percent of its electric usage.

In addition to using solar energy, Ford is using recycled materials to build its vehicles. Recycled tires are being used to build specific parts of its engines.  More than 200,000 tires have been re-used so far. Ford has used biodegradable materials for its seat cushions before including soy foam seats.

Some companies are exploring other forms of energy that are much more greener than gasoline. Natural gas is an option that is being considered. There is just one natural gas car on the market right now and that is the Honda Civic GX. The main problem with natural gas is that the infrastructure is not in place to support a lot of users. Another option that car makers are looking into is ethanol which is a lot more affordable and cleaner burning than gasoline. Not to mention more affordable too.
